ABSTRACT The genus Capsicum is an economically important vegetable around the world, in Mexico it produces great amount of money to the agricultural area, therefore it is important the growth of varieties that let open new areas of opportunity in the national and international commerce. One of these varieties is cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) which exploitation is reduced to just wild populations since there has been many attempts to cultivate it in an intensive way having as a result low percentage of germination since the seed shows non-deep physiological dormancy, a feature that has wild species. However, in spite of the research that has been done in this species, it has not been exploited as it should, therefore in this study we propose to study the effect of temperature (4°C and 24°C) and the age of storage of cayenne pepper seeds (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age), soaked in comercial gibberellic acid (Biogib) on germination, and the phytohormone content such as gibberellins, auxins and kinetin that are in the seeds and that intervene in the process of germination, we also study the effect of the cell división process, with the objective of corroborating the physiological relationship of phytohormones with the cell division processes that take place during germination, in order to identify the ideal age of seed crop storaged at 4°C and 24°C. To evaluate the phytohormone content we used the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and to analize the cell cycle división we used the flow cytometer. The results we got through the use of 3 types of bioassays (germination, phytohormone content and cell cycle) show that it is at 9 months of storage when the seed performs better at germination, this result could be verified with the data gotten with the use of HPLC because it was at this age when we observed a higher amount of gibberellins, auxins and kinetine and the flow cytometer analysis showed that at 9 months of age the seed shows higher cell division, these results let us conclude that at 9 months of age the seed has reached physiological maturity, reflected on the high content of phytohormones that promote germinationand the process of cell división that is very active at this age, therefore we suggest that at 9 months of seed storage is the ideal age to cultivate the seed and get higher percentage of germination.
